Park Theatre Artistic Director Jez Bond directs Building The Wall, the European premiere of the political thriller that’s already taken America by storm.

Building The Wall is written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan, and explores how, under the right circumstances, the inconceivable can become the inevitable.

In 2019 America, the “beautiful wall” has been completed, and the President has been impeached. Rick (played by Trevor White) is incarcerated, awaiting sentencing for the crime of the century – unspeakable acts that befell after the wall was built.

He grants just one interview – to Gloria (Angela Griffin), an African American historian. In a world where history is written by the winners, Gloria wants a full account – unfiltered, and direct from source. The result is a shockingly pertinent tale, and a visceral reaction to recent political developments in the world.

In a time of “fake news” surrounding one of the world’s most powerful and controversial political figures, Schenkkan himself writes of the production “The past is often the future, and in this play I have imagined a not so distant time.” Building The Wall examines what happens when an ordinary person becomes a cog in a regime and how the inconceivable becomes the inevitable, hitting home hard in its UK premiere.

Robert Schenkkan is a Pulitzer Prize, Tony, and WGA Award winner, and three-time Emmy nominated writer. His film writing credits include Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield, and The Quiet American directed by Phillip Noyce.

The production’s run will also include a gala performance on Tuesday 15 May at 6pm, as part of Park Theatre’s 5th birthday celebrations. The show is supported by Park Theatre’s Producers’ Circle.
