Based on the Fassbinder play, which received acclaim and notoriety when released as a film in 1972, The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant is Gerald Barry’s third opera. The claustrophobic exploration of loneliness, obsession and female love remains faithful to the original and is set in Denis Calandra’s English translation.
The world stage premiere is directed by Richard Jones, whose production of The Trojans won an Olivier Award for Best New Opera in 2004.
