Kenneth MacMillan, Ninette de Valois and John Cranko are all major figures in the history of the Sadler’s Wells Ballet, and this programme features revivals of some of their classic works. McMillan’s wistful Solitaire sees a young girl who, unable to find acceptance, dances alone to Malcolm Arnold’s glorious score. In De Valois’ Checkmate, conflict, contemplation and cunning are combined as the beautiful Black Queen mercilessly sweeps aside all her opponents. Finally, Cranko’s highly romantic The Lady and the Fool is a deeply passionate dance set to Verdi’s wonderful score.
Hobson’s Choice takes us to the modest surrounds of a Salford shoe-shop, from which springs a gleeful romantic comedy. When headstrong Maggie Hobson sets her sights on painfully shy cobbler Will Mossop, he’s got no choice but to submit. David Bintley’s acclaimed ‘English’ ballet is shot through with joyous choreography and perfect comic timing. Set to a score influenced by music hall, opera and brass bands, this ballet is guaranteed to lift your spirits.
