Anne-Marie Duff returns to the Donmar Warehouse in Alan Hollinghurst’s new version of Berenice.

Artistic Director Josie Rourke directs the Olivier Award-winning actress in this ancient tale about the Emperor of Rome’s lover.

Written by French dramatist Jean Racine, the tragedy of unfulfilled passion has been adapted by Man Booker Prize winner Hollinghurst to create a version that anatomises the agony of love.

Berenice’s long and patient wait is over. Her lover, Titus, is now Emperor of Rome and, with his succession, she can become queen. But the Roman people make their disapproval known and Titus must choose between love and responsibility. Antiochus, Titus’s best friend, is sent to comfort her but reveals his own unrequited love.

Duff has previously appeared at the Donmar in Days Of Wine And Roses. While she is well known for her on screen roles in Shameless, The Virgin Queen and Nowhere Boy, her other theatre credits include Cause Célèbre at the Old Vic, Saint Joan at the National Theatre and The Soldier’s Fortune and The Daughter-In-Law at the Young Vic.
