Berlioz’s first opera comes to the London Colisuem for the first time in a production directed by Terry Gilliam.
Featuring stunning visual and musical set pieces, Benvenuto Cellini is based on the autobiography of celebrated 16th century goldsmith and sculptor Cellini, and interweaves two plots, that of his love for Teresa and his fulfilment of a commission to cast a bronze statue of Perseus.
A tale of thwarted love, elopement, intrigue, disguise, mistaken identity, secular merry-making and sacred ceremony combines with Berlioz’s vibrant and tender music in this significant new production by Gilliam and ENO Music Director Edward Gardner, the duo behind 2011’s The Damnation Of Faust.
This production is sung and surtitled in English.
