Ben Whishaw and Bertie Carvel star in Anne Carson’s new version of Euripides’ hedonistic, visceral tragedy Bakkhai.

Skyfall actor Whishaw makes his Almeida Theatre debut in the role of Dionysos alongside Olivier Award-winning star of Matilda The Musical, Carvel, as Pentheus.

A struggle to the death between freedom and restraint, the rational and the irrational, man and god, Euripides’ tragic tale follows the story of Pentheus as he bans the wild ritualistic worship of the god Dionysos.

Directed by James Macdonald, Bakkhai features just three actors and a chorus, echoing the original Ancient Greek performance model.
