It is April 1969 and at the Teatro Solis, Montevideo, Gabriel Garcia Lorca’s play about Marina Pineda, who was martyred in Granada in 1831 for refusing to reveal the names of revolutionary leaders, is about to begin.

As the curtain rises, an actress, Margarita, passes on to her young student her memories of Lorca, whom she last saw shortly before  he was murdered at the Fountain of Tears – Ainadamar.

Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamr is the first of three contemporary operas presented as part of Present Voices, the others are Adriana Mater by Kaija Saariaho and Waiting for the Barbarians by Philip Glass.
