Showing that he still has the gift of the gab, A One Night Stand With Barrie Rutter gives a close-up look at a Yorkshire life on an English stage. Readings, memories and anecdotes tell the story of the son of a fishworker who grew up in a two-up two-down on the Hessle Road, the fish dock area of Hull. His acting career began when his English teacher cast him into the school play because he ‘had the gob for it’.

A One Night Stand With Barrie Rutter tells how the little lad from Hull made it to the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, where he first worked closely with Tony Harrison and discovered a passion for performing in the Northern voice. Rutter continued his successful career and established his theatre company, Northern Broadsides in 1992. From hand-to-mouth beginnings, Rutter and his company went on to win numerous awards.

Rutter was first diagnosed with prostate cancer four years ago; and after successful treatment was given the all clear. Six months ago, the cancer returned. This one off performance is a charity fundraiser for the excellent work of The Prostate Cancer Charity, hoping to raise awareness and support for all those that are affected by this disease.
