Zorro, the new musical based on the legend of the masked man of Spanish California, is to close at the Garrick theatre on 14 March. It had been booking until September.
Featuring the music of The Gipsy Kings and flamenco dancing choreographed by Rafael Amargo, Zorro brought a Latin flavour to the West End when it premiered in July 2008. Based on the famous pulp fiction myth and produced by novelist Isabel Allende, who wrote Zorro: A Novel, the musical tells the tale of Don Diego de la Vega, who fights against the oppressive rulers of Spanish California under the guise of Zorro.
The cast includes Matt Rawle as the masked man himself, Emma Williams as his love interest Luisa, Lesli Margherita as the gypsy Inez and Adam Levy as Zorro’s nemesis, Ramon. They are directed by Christopher Renshaw, whose credits include We Will Rock You and Taboo.
Last week Zorro was nominated for five Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and nominations for Rawle, Williams and Margherita. The winners are announced at a ceremony on 8 March, a week before the closure of Zorro. Join us on the night for full coverage of the Laurence Olivier Awards including exclusive video footage.
No further productions have yet been confirmed for the Garrick.
