The Young Vic’s critically acclaimed production of Golem will transfer to the West End this spring, playing a limited five-week season at the Trafalgar Studio 1 in April.
Presented by multi award-winning theatre company 1927, the production will run from 14 April (press night 22 April) to 22 May at the venue that is currently playing home to Jamie Lloyd’s second star-studded Trafalgar Transformed seasons.
Combining live performance with music, film and animation, Golem charts the story of extraordinarily ordinary Robert Robertson, whose life is irrevocably disrupted when he purchases a creature called a golem that promises to improve the efficiency of his daily affairs.
A visually arresting and satirical take on our misuse of technology, the show follows Robert as he upgrades to superior model Golem 2 and begins to question what happens when man is no longer in control of machine.
Golem opened at the Young Vic in December 2014, when it was described by Official London Theatre’s Charlotte Marshall as “Technically brilliant, visually spectacular, impressively choreographed and stunningly inventive.”
Shortly after its premiere, the show picked up a Critics’ Circle Award for Paul Barritt’s spectacular set, sharing the award for Best Designer with current West End hit The Nether, which transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre following its success at the Royal Court.
Written and directed by Suzanne Andrade, the transfer’s cast comprises Will Close, Charlotte Dubery, Lillian Henley, Rose Robinson and Shamira Turner.
Golem will open at the Trafalgar Studio 1 following the current run of The Ruling Class, in which James McAvoy plays a man who believes he’s God until 11 April.
The transfer of Andrade’s hit play adds to the Young Vic’s incredible success over the past year and follows in the footsteps of previous transfers, The Scottsboro Boys and A View From The Bridge, the latter of which is still wowing audiences at the Wyndham’s Theatre.
