Banned in its home country, Belarus Free Theatre will once again be supported by the London theatre community in 2012, when it stages Minsk 2011 at the Young Vic.
The Fringe First-winning production runs from 12 to 23 June, and is an unflinching piece about repression and sexuality in Belarus, inspired by 1981 piece NYC 1979, which looked at sexuality in New York.
Many of the company members of Belarus Free Theatre have been persecuted under the political regime in their home country, serving time in prison, losing jobs and being forced to stage underground performances in the face of censorship.
Minsk 2011 is the latest production to join a Young Vic 2012 line-up that also includes Patrick Stewart playing Shakespeare in Bingo, million-selling book Wild Swans adapted for the stage and The Suit, a new musical version of Peter Brook’s Le Costume.
