The Open Air theatre is continuing its commitment to making Shakespeare accessible to younger audiences with a new production of The Tempest, which runs from 5 to 28 June at the Regent’s Park venue.
Shakespeare’s magical adventure centres on the sorcerer Prospero, who conjures up a storm to shipwreck his enemies, sparking a story of spells, monsters, revenge and romance.
The Open Air production of The Tempest will be specially devised for audiences aged six and over by director and choreographer Liam Steel. One of the country’s leading physical theatre practitioners, Steel has previously worked with DV8 and Complicite and is now Artistic Director of his own company, Stan Won’t Dance. His recent work includes choreographing the West End production of Imagine This, which was directed by Timothy Sheader, Artistic Director of the Open Air theatre.
This production of The Tempest follows last year’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Open Air theatre’s first youth-orientated Shakespearean production.
In order to make the show even more accessible to families, the venue is introducing Sunday performances for The Tempest at 11:00 and 14:30 for the run of the show.
No casting has yet been announced for The Tempest, or the other shows in the Open Air season, which include Much Ado About Nothing, Hello, Dolly! and The Importance Of Being Earnest.
