Young Frankenstein comes alive in West End 2017

First Published 28 October 2016, Last Updated 28 October 2016

Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein is pencilled for a West End opening in Autumn 2017, following a pre-London season at the Newcastle Theatre Royal.

Renowned comedian, composer, filmmaker and actor Mel Brooks, whose sharply witty farces and parodies include musical favourite The Producers, returns to the stage to collaborate with Broadway director and choreographer Susan Stroman. Based on the Oscar-nominated 1974 film, this all-singing, all-dancing new production, co-written with Thomas Meehan, brings his and Gene Wilder’s comedy to life on stage as you’ve never seen it before.

A wickedly hilarious re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Young Frankenstein sees New York brain surgeon and professor Frederick Frankenstein inherit a Transylvanian castle from his deranged genius grandfather, Victor Von Frankenstein, complete with laboratory.

But this poses a dilemma: does Frederick continue to run from his family’s tortured past, or does he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather’s mad experiments reanimating the dead and, in doing so, fall in love with beautiful lab assistant Inga?

Young Frankenstein will play at the Newcastle Theatre Royal from 26 August to 9 September 2017, before opening in the West End later in the autumn. Full creative team and casting is to be announced.
