Nicholas Woodeson is to lead the cast of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls when the Stephen Daldry-directed production returns to the West End on 22 September.
Woodeson returns to the role of Inspector Goole, a part he last played on Broadway where the long-running production transferred in 1994 after winning four Laurence Olivier Awards for its London premiere the previous year.
Woodeson is a Laurence Olivier Award-nominated actor whose recent London stage credits include Moonlight And Magnolias at the Tricycle theatre, The Birthday Party at the Lyric Hammersmith and Legal Fictions at the Savoy theatre. His television work includes the acclaimed serial Rome.
The actor is joined in the cast of An Inspector Calls by David Roper, Sandra Duncan, Marianne Oldham, Robin Whiting, Timothy Watson and Diana Payne Myers.
Priestley’s play is set before the First World War in the home of the prosperous Birling family, whose peaceful dinner party is shattered when Inspector Goole arrives to investigate the death of a young woman.
This production, by Billy Elliot director Daldry, premiered at the National Theatre before transferring to the West End and Broadway. It then returned to the West End where it remained for eight years, while a touring production has been seen all over the world. The production now returns to London featuring the same award-winning designs by Ian MacNeil.
An Inspector Calls plays at the Novello theatre for eight weeks only, to 14 November. It is followed by the Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’s Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, which previews from 21 November.
