Expect an extra dose of cabbage and crime at the Bloomsbury Theatre this Christmas as David Walliams’ much-loved Gangsta Granny receives its London stage premiere.
The hugely popular book will be on hand to entertain families over the festive period from 15 December and is brought to the stage by Birmingham Stage Company, the family theatre champions behind a string of hits including the Horrible Histories series and Tom’s Midnight Garden.
Speaking about its arrival on stage, writer, comedian and Britain’s Got Talent judge Walliams described himself as “over the moon”, commenting: “It’s the most popular of all my books, and I am sure this production by the brilliant Birmingham Stage Company will delight not just children but their parents and of course grandparents.”
Walliams added children’s writer to his long list of talents in 2008 when his debut The Boy In The Dress was published. Gangsta Granny followed in 2011 and was subsequently made into an acclaimed BBC television adaptation in which Walliams himself starred.
Packed full of Walliams’ much-loved silly humour and clever wit, the cabbage-tastic tale tells the story of Ben and his dread at being stuck with his Granny on a Friday night. But while he’s expecting an evening of cabbage soup, cabbage pie and cabbage cake, this Granny has a secret and it’s one that’s going to make Friday nights more exciting than Ben could ever imagine…
Described as a must-see “for everyone from 5 to 105”, Gangsta Granny will be adapted and directed by the genius behind Horrible Histories’ stage shows, Neal Foster, and stars Gilly Tomkins as the grey-haired hero herself and Ashley Cousins as Ben.
The show will play at the Bloomsbury Theatre until 24 January.
