Wallander’s Henriksson makes West End debut

Krister Henriksson, the actor best known for playing Wallander in the critically acclaimed Swedish TV series, will make his West End debut in Doktor Glas next spring.

Adapted from Hjalmer Söderberg’s classic novel, Doktor Glas transfers to the Wyndham’s theatre, following its 2006 premiere at Sweden’s National Theatre, for a limited run from 16 April to 11 May.

Performed in its original Swedish with English surtitles, Doktor Glas tells the story of a 19th century physician who falls madly in love with the beautiful young wife of a corrupt clergyman. When she confides in him that her marriage is making her miserable, he agrees to help in whatever way he can. Soon Doktor Glas finds himself torn between his passion and his morality, and drives the play towards its shocking climax.

While Henriksson may not have been seen on the London stage before, he is a highly respected theatre actor in his home country and has previously been awarded an Eugene O’Neill Award, Sweden’s prestigious stage accolade.

Best known for his role in the police drama shown by BBC Four and remade for BBC One starring Kenneth Branagh, Henriksson worked alongside Ingmar Bergman when he directed him in A Winter’s Tale, and was later handpicked by the legendary writer and director to play his younger self in Liv Ullman’s film Faithless.

Doktor Glas is co-directed by Henriksson and Peder Bjurman and will open to the press on 18 April.
