As the hit Beatles musical returns to London’s West End, what better way to celebrate than invite a select few to a Fab Four-themed hotel suite then play a gig from the Garrick Theatre’s balcony?
Short of enticing an entire auditorium to sing along to Hey Jude – which is achieved at the end of every production of Let It Be, anyway – there is no better way.
The problem with most hotel rooms, of course, is that you can’t fit vast numbers of people inside them; they’re more the size of the barber shop on Penny Lane than a wide, expansive Strawberry Field.
Such intimacy means most of us would never get the chance to see the All You Need Is Love pillow, the delightfully bristly moustache doormat or the love light that comes with the room.
It’s a relief, then, that a handy camera person was on hand to follow events at the Waldorf Hilton, and the subsequent pre-show open air mini-gig at the Garrick Theatre, to open our eyes to such delights and leave us wondering how a Let It Be lolly might taste. Not, presumably, like something you’d find in an octopuses garden.
The much loved Beatles concert is now playing its third West End season, returning to the Garrick Theatre for a run that will take it through the summer to the end of September.
Featuring a cast who look (ish), sound and perform like Liverpool’s most famous sons, the show takes London audiences on a trip through arguably the greatest canon of pop music ever created. It takes in songs including When I’m 64, Twist And Shout, Hard Day’s Night, Back In The USSR and, of course, the title track.
