David Suchet as The Importance Of Being Earnest’s Lady Bracknell; has any phrase ever conjured up so delicious an image in your mind? A man most famed for his pencil moustache and distinctly male attire as Hercules Poirot decked out as a very Victorian lady, come on, that’s got to raise a smile. It did for us.
That smile evolved into a face-wide grin when we watched the transformation taking place, as the lovely Mr Suchet changes into the less lovely Lady Bracknell. It’s like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, but without the cocoon. Or the wings.
Why is the multiple Olivier Award nominee undergoing such a process? He’s playing Lady Bracknell in a West End production of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of manners, which follows a pair of cads who use alter egos to hide their escapades in the country and in the city. When they both fall in love, however, their stories begin to unravel.
