Theatre Local

Vera Vera Vera to Belong in Peckham

The Royal Court’s third Theatre Local scheme will see Bola Agbaje’s Belong and Hayley Squires’s Vera Vera Vera transfer to the CLF Arts Café in Peckham’s Bussey Building from 31 May to 28 July.

Belong, a play that questions our notions of home, will play at the former cricket bat factory from 31 May to 23 June followed by Vera Vera Vera from 4 to 28 July.

The debut play from the 23-year-old actress Squires, which is currently playing upstairs at the Royal Court as part of this year’s Young Writers Festival, is a blackly comic tale about what we are willing to fight for.

Launched in 2010, Theatre Local, a project that aims to take the Royal Court’s plays to alternative spaces, will be held in the Bussey Building for its second year after relocating from an empty shop unit in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.

The project, which is sponsored by Bloomberg, also includes a series of workshops and events, and tickets are sold on a pay-what-you-like basis to encourage new and diverse audiences.

Jemma Read from Bloomberg commented: “This represents an exciting new dimension to Bloomberg’s ongoing commitment to provide opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access to the arts.

“We are delighted that our continued collaboration with the Royal Court theatre on Theatre Local will inspire artists and audiences to engage in new ways and in new spaces.”
