Artistic Director of the Tricycle Theatre Indhu Rubasingham has today announced plans for a brand new initiative to build the theatregoing community of tomorrow.
Entitled Mapping Brent, the innovative scheme will see six new theatre companies created, with five for young people and a sixth for all ages. The Tricycle will then work with six satellite venues across its home borough of Brent on a weekly basis to engage these communities in a local setting.
All six theatre companies will be free of charge, enabling them to be fully accessible and open to all, and all will offer workshops, events and activities across Neasden, South Kilburn, Stonebridge, Wembley Park, Harlesden and Kilburn.
Twelve professional playwrights and directors from across the industry have been engaged to lead the project, including Sonali Bhattacharyya, Cressida Brown, Toby Clarke, Tinuke Craig, Emma Dennis Edwards, Shereen Jasmin-Phillips, Chino Odimba, Nadia Papachronopoulou, Toby Peach, Somalia Seaton and Audrey Sheffield.
Of the announcement, Indhu said: “Today more than ever it is vital for us to give young people a voice and a platform to be heard. The work our young companies produce will tell us what matters to them, what’s on their mind and how they view the world today.
“We want to make a commitment to work with young people from across Brent, engage with people in their community and to form lasting relationships.”
The six companies will meet for the first time this month, with participants commencing on an intensive programme to develop their acting skills over 20 sessions, culminating in the creation of 6 original performance pieces to be performed in Spring 2017.
