The Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away will land in London’s Phoenix Theatre from 30 January 2019.
Telling the heart-warming stories of 7,000 stranded air passengers in the wake of 9/11, and the small community of Newfoundland that welcomed them in, Come From Away will make its UK premiere next year, with an opening night on 18 February 2019.
The smash-hit musical, which won the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley) in 2017 and garnered 6 further nominations, continues its record-breaking seasons on Broadway and in Canada. A 60-city North American Tour launches in October in Seattle, and a feature film adaptation is in the works.
Come From Away is a joyous new musical that showcases how, in the wake of catastrophe, enduring friendships can grow and prosper.
On 11 September 2001, the world stopped – and on 12 September, their stories moved the world. Passengers of planes from around the globe were welcomed into the homes and lives of the residents of Gander, Newfoundland. Despite initial clashes of culture and nerves running high, uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.
The UK premiere of Come From Away follows an engagement at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre from 6 December 2018.
Canada’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mrs Janice Charette, said: “I could not be more delighted that Come From Away is coming to the UK next year. A story that captures the kindness and humanity of the people of Canada – and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in particular – at a crucial moment in U.S. and global history. This show reminds us what good neighbours and true friendship is all about. Audiences in London are in for a treat.”
Come From Away features a book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein and is directed by Christopher Ashley, with musical staging by Kelly Devine.
