Told by an Idiot Get Happy at the Barbican

First Published 18 October 2013, Last Updated 18 October 2013

Critically acclaimed theatre company Told by an Idiot will return to the Barbican theatre with its first ever show for children this Christmas.

Get Happy will play from 12 to 29 December in the East London arts venue’s Barbican Pit space and is a madcap, mischievous show for everyone aged four and older directed by the innovative company’s co-Artistic Director Paul Hunter.

Combining performance, dance, music and visual comedy, Get Happy takes inspiration from everyone from Charlie Chaplin to children’s favourite Dr Seuss to create an interactive, energetic show featuring the strangest ever egg sandwich created live on stage and even a gorilla-loving opera singer!

Speaking about the project, which follows the company’s many acclaimed shows for adult audiences including its most recent London hit, My Perfect Mind at the Young Vic, Hunter commented: “Whilst developing Get Happy with the involvement and feedback of young audiences, I have been constantly fascinated by the often random nature of their imaginations. Far from being bound by a search for meaning or desire to make connections, they will happily flip from one idea to the next. We’re thrilled that this fits with the desire for spontaneity and theatrical anarchy that is at the heart of all of Told by an Idiot’s work.”

Get Happy will star frequent Told by an Idiot performers Steve Harper and Sophie Russell alongside 17-year-old dancer and actor Michael Ureta, who was last seen in ZooNation’s Groove Down The Road and returns to the Barbican following his appearance in Blue Boy Entertainment’s Pied Piper in 2009.
