In Token Talk, we ask cast members and creatives of top touring shows to tell us all about themselves! From how they got their start in the industry to their favourite shows, we want to know everything.
This month we caught up with Kevin Yates, who plays Ronald Clifford in Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical – now on its UK tour across Theatre Tokens venues.
1. My route into theatre was…
I was lucky enough to go to Springwood High School in King’s Lynn, which had an incredible Drama department who were dedicated to giving students a hands on experience of theatre. I was taught community values and camaraderie that has been vital in navigating the industry.
2. My West End idol is…
All the understudies, swings and covers – they are the lifeblood of the industry and they all deserve more praise and recognition.
3. My colleagues would describe me as…
A silly goose.
4. My favourite show is…
Anything Kander and Ebb! I’m also very partial to Stephen Sondheim.
5. The career moment I’m most proud of is…
I take great pride in being a Standby in Come From Away. It is a privilege to have performed 4 of the 12 iconic roles in that show.

6. The hardest part about my job is…
In Cruel intentions specifically – not singing along to Genie In A Bottle too loudly in the wings- what a ’90s banger!
7. If I wasn’t an actor, I would be…
When I was a kid I really wanted to be an archaeologist until I was informed that it isn’t at all like the Tomb Raider video games. Dreams shattered.
8. Something people don’t know about me is…
I have a drag persona… named Misty Van Cartier!
9. The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…
You don’t need anyone’s respect but your own.
10. The one thing I wish I could tell my younger self is…
Take a ballet class, dear.
