Fans of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved stories will be jumping for joy in theatres this year, as Tiddler And Other Terrific Tales and The Scarecrows’ Wedding are set to join previously announced West End hit The Gruffalo on the London stage.
The first of Scamp Theatre’s newly announced productions that young audiences have to look forward to is Tiddler And Other Terrific Tales, which is set to play at the Leicester Square from 11 July to 31 August.
Combining live music, puppetry and a host of colourful characters from Donaldson’s hugely popular titles, the Sally Cookson-directed production promises funky moves, toe-tapping tunes and guaranteed giggles as it brings the stories of Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant In Town and A Squash And A Squeeze to life on stage.
The tale-tastic treat for ages three and older will be joined later in July by the writer/illustrator duo’s heart-warming story of two scarecrows. The Scarecrows’ Wedding sets up residence at the Watford Palace Theatre from 24 to 25 July before returning to a trio of other London venues – the Redbridge Drama Centre (29 September), Greenwich Theatre (5 October) and artsdepot (10 and 11 October) – in the autumn.
The epic love story about Harry and Betty follows the loved-up pair as they decide to get married. After Harry sets off to fetch some wedding day essentials, the farmer notices he’s missing a scarecrow and replaces the groom-to-be with a new scarecrow, the devilishly smooth and dangerous Reginald Rake.
Audiences aged three and older will have to head to one of the four venues to find out whether Reginald can persuade Betty that he is the scarecrow for her, or whether Harry succeeds in making it back before his dashing and daring replacement ruins their special day.
