The record-breaking Michael Jackson musical phenomenon, Thriller Live, is to delight audiences across the UK and in the People’s Republic of China.
Bringing the iconic dancing and sound of many of Michael’s greatest hits to international audiences, the smash-hit musical has announced an extension at the Lyric Theatre until 1 October 2017, plans for a UK and European tour in January 2017, and celebrations of a spectacular production performed to open the new state-of-the-art 1,200-seat Parisian Theatre in Macao, People’s Republic of China.
The news marks the culmination of a spectacular journey for the resounding show, which first opened in London in January 2009. Currently the all-time 10th longest running show in the West End, it holds the record as the longest running show in the Lyric Theatre’s history, and recently sold its 2 millionth West End ticket.
From plans to bring its dazzling spectacle to 12 theatres across the UK and several countries across Europe, adding to the 32 countries it has already visited worldwide, to its opening of the Parisian Theatre at the heart of a $2.9 billion hotel complex in Macao, where it will play for seven weeks, it’s clear that the fandom of the production continues to grow globally.
Of the series of exciting announcements, producers Paul Walden and Derek Nicol said: “After more than eight years in the West End, Thriller Live continues to go from strength to strength.”
“We have had a spectacular summer and year on year audience numbers are fantastic. Michael Jackson’s music has never been more popular, and just like Wicked and other successful shows, Thriller Live has many loyal fans who come back time after time for repeat visits. We aim to keep the show fresh and exciting for them for many years to come through subtle changes, additional special effects and new video content.”
Unlike other West End musicals, Thriller Live adopts not a specific plot, but instead celebrates Michael’s music and dance legacy with specially created video footage and effects, pulsating sound and Gary Lloyd’s high-energy choreography, bringing to life on stage Michael’s inimitable dancing and catalogue of pop’s greatest all-time hits, including Beat It, Billie Jean, Earth Song, Man In The Mirror and, of course, Thriller.
