Hit Michael Jackson spectacular Thriller Live has become the 20th longest running musical in West End history after notching up an incredible 2,392 performances at the Lyric Theatre.
The all-singing, all-dancing tribute to the legendary singer makes the top 20 after surpassing the runs of iconic musicals The Sound Of Music and My Fair Lady.
The production, which is now in its sixth year in the West End, is also just 137 performances away from knocking Grease off the 19th spot and 226 performances away from overtaking the original 1960 production of Oliver!, which played 2,618 performances.
Commenting on the show’s milestone, producers Paul Walden and Derek Nicol said: “We are thrilled that Thriller Live has entered the record books and joined the exalted ranks of the 20 most popular long-running shows in the history of the West End. We look forward to breaking more records in 2015!”
Next year, the musical hopes to add the original 1978 production of Evita to the list of productions it leaves in its wake. The hit Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical is currently in 16th place with 2,900 performances and is just ahead of the current production of Jersey Boys, which has played more than 2,739 performances.
Thriller Live combines eye-popping video footage and special effects with some of Jackson’s most popular songs including I Want You Back, I’ll Be There, Can You Feel It, Rock With You, Thriller, Beat It, ABC, Man In The Mirror, Dirty Diana, Billie Jean and Earth Song.
The hit musical recently extended its booking period until 6 September 2015 with an additional 138,000 tickets released for the show’s run.
