She Stoops To Conquer’s leading lady Sophie Thompson and Spooks actress Miranda Raison will star in Josie Rourke’s forthcoming production of The Physicists at the Donmar Warehouse.
Playing from 31 May to 21 July, the high-profile female leads will be joined by EastEnders actor Paul Bhattacharjee, who was last seen on stage in the Tricycle’s The Bomb season, Thompson’s She Stoops To Conquer co-star John Heffernan, Much Ado About Nothing’s John Ramm, National Theatre regular Justin Salinger and Joanna Brookes.
Raison, who was last seen on stage in the title role of Shakespeare’s Globe’s Anne Boleyn, will appear as a nurse at a sanatorium where three scientists Johann Mobius (Heffernan), Albert Einstein (Bhattacharjee) and Issac Newton (Salinger) are seemingly committed. Olivier Award-nominated actress Thompson will play psychiatrist Dr Mathilde von Zahnd.
Written in the shadow of the atom bomb by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, The Physicists is presented in a new version by Jack Thorne. Regularly hailed as a satirical masterpiece, the play asks whether insanity is the only refuge for the dangerously intelligent.
The Physicists follows Robert Holman’s triptych Making Noise Quietly which will start previews at the much-lauded venue next week.
