This week has seen numerous casts and venues celebrate Captioning Awareness Week, taking place between 14 to 19 November, by ‘putting their name in the frame.’
Supporting the 11 million people in the UK who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing, Captioning Awareness Week aims to promote captioned access to the arts through social media and beyond.
The initiative is led by Stagetext, a charity that provides captioning at arts venues across the UK. They hope to transform people’s theatrical and cultural experiences by spreading awareness of captions and live subtitles in theatre. The initiative has been supported by arts organisations across the country, as well as some of Theatreland’s most famous faces, spreading the message via social media:
