The Old Vic has London Calling

First Published 8 August 2016, Last Updated 8 August 2016

Theatre will take to the radio waves this month as The Old Vic Community Company launches “London Calling”, a free technology-led interactive experience.

London Calling will see three dedicated telephone booths installed opposite the Waterloo-based theatre, along with a further phone inside its café. These will ring at random intervals throughout the day for a fortnight, carrying intimate voicemail messages from one Londoner to another, including expressions of unrequited love, gratitude, guilt and regret.

People can also sign-up to hear the voicemails on their own mobile phones for free through London Calling’s website

Devised in collaboration with Flying Object, the Company will operate the innovative experience every day from 9-21 August between 10:00 and 22:00. This will coincide with the run of their 2016 play, RISE, which will play at a pop-up site opposite the theatre from 10-21 August.

RISE explores, through a human, personal story and a kaleidoscope of ideas, the environmental impact of life in a city where the temperature is always on the rise. Tickets can be purchased from The Old Vic’s website.

Inside the theatre this month, however, is the hugely exciting new musical Groundhog Day, based on the hit 1992 film. Reuniting the creative team behind Matilda The Musical, including Artistic Director Matthew Warchus and witty musician Tim Minchin, the show tells the repeating story of a cynical weatherman with the world’s worst case of déjà vu. You can purchase your tickets to see it through us here.
