Like Whitney, we believe that children are our future, so seeing the next generation of musical theatre stars take to the stage is very exciting indeed. Following the success of last year’s showcase, the National Youth Music Theatre is returning to The Other Palace for its 2019 summer season.
This year, the young starlets will be performing three musicals: Parade by Alfred Uhrey, Legend Trippers Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie, and Anything Goes by Cole Porter.
This year’s commission, Legend Trippers, comes from the award-winning writing partnership of writer/actor, Scott Gilmour, and composer/musical director, Claire McKenzie aka Noisemaker. Legend Trippers uses the lens of a group of mismatched school kids who all share a love of the supernatural to explore themes of social and political division, shining a light on how we treat “outsiders”.
The Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all odds amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension. It tells the tragic, true story of the trial and lynching of a man wrongly accused of murder.
The third and final show is the classic Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes. Music, dance, laughs, and the age-old tale of Boy Meets Girl – Anything Goes is a hilarious shipboard romp, wrapped around one of Cole Porter’s most magical scores.
Auditions were held in cities across the UK including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Cambridge, Glasgow and Leeds.
The National Youth Music Theatre provides opportunities for talented individuals aged 10-23 through workshops, master classes and residential courses led by industry professionals. Previous members of the National Youth Music Theatre include Olivier Award-winner Hamilton’s Michael Jibson, Sheridan Smith, Les Mis’ Amara Okereke, choreographer Drew McOnie, along with famed film and TV actors Jude Law and Idris Elba.
This is a brilliant opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow as they make their London theatre debut.
