Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s new musical, The Girls, will open at the Phoenix Theatre from 28 January 2017.
The Girls originally premiered as a play in 2015 at the Leeds Grand Theatre, and later at The Lowry in Salford in 2016. Based on the 2003 film, The Girls is the real life story of a Women’s Institute group who decide to fundraise for a local hospital by posing for a raunchy-but-tasteful nude calendar, inadvertently making the group media sensations.
The ‘Girls’ will be portrayed on stage by Debbie Chazen as Ruth, Sophie-Louise Dann as Celia, Michele Dotrice as Jessie, Claire Machin as Cora, Claire Moore as Chris and Joanna Riding as Annie.
The show will have a score penned by Gary Barlow, and with book and lyrics by Tim Firth, who also directs. They grew up in the same village in the north of England and have been friends for 25 years. Gary has written and co-written 14 number one singles, has sold over 50 million records worldwide and is a 6 times Ivor Novello Award winner. Tim has won the Olivier Award and UK Theatre Award for Best New Musical, and the British Comedy Awards Best Comedy Film for Calendar Girls.
