The Cat In The Hat is back

Published 29 October 2014

The National Theatre’s hit adaptation of Dr Seuss’ classic The Cat In The Hat will return to London later this year for a festive run at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington.

Katie Mitchell’s acclaimed adaptation of one of the world’s most popular children’s stories will play from 8 December to 4 January following a sell-out run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Telling the story of the infamous red and white striped hat-wearing cat, the family show brings to life his adventures with Sally and her brother under the imaginative vision of Mitchell, one of theatre’s most innovative theatremakers.

From the moment the cat arrives at their door, the siblings know he is the funniest, most mischievous cat they have ever met. With the trickiest of tricks and craziest of ideas, he turns a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure. But what will mum find when she gets home?

Suitable for children aged three and older, Mitchell’s stage adaptation was first seen at the National Theatre in 2009. In The Telegraph’s four star review from the premier production, theatre critic Charles Spencer called Mitchell’s production “a joy,” reassuring diehard fans of the book that: “Dr Seuss and his famous Cat in the Hat have been treated with exemplary respect… Every scene in this story of a deliciously urbane, smug, and wildly anarchic cat… has been painstakingly recreated.”
