The month of August will have a celebratory feel for everyone involved with the West End production of The 39 Steps, which marks four birthdays with a series of events from 13-19 August. The release of the original film (1 Aug), film director Alfred Hitchcock;s birthday (13 Aug), the first anniversary of the West End production (14 Aug) and novel writer John Buchan;s birthday (29 Aug) are giving everyone cause to celebrate.
Among the events being held to mark the quartet of anniversaries are performances combined with a special menu at The Ritz (14 Aug), a science of spying Ducktours trip from the Science Museum to the Criterion (15 Aug), a screening of the film at the Everyman in Hampstead (19 Aug) and a gala performance of the show followed by a party on 16 August.
The West End production of The 39 Steps sees four actors playing over 150 roles as they tell the story of Richard Hannay, a man falsely accused of murder who goes on the run to clear his name. The comic adaptation, which features a cast of Jimmy Chisolm, Simon Gregor, Rachel Pickup and Robert Portal, includes all of the film's most famous sense including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge and the death-defying finale in the London Palladium.
