Former Dr Who co-stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be reunited on the London stage this summer, when they lead the cast of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at the Wyndham’s theatre.
The pair will play quick-witted lovers Beatrice and Benedick in Shakespeare’s comedy, which runs from 16 May. The play is directed by Josie Rourke, Artistic Director of London’s influential fringe venue the Bush theatre.
Much Ado About Nothing tells the story of two couples. Lovers Claudio and Hero are set to be married, but the scheming of a resentful Prince looks set to thwart the nuptials. Marriage seems inconceivable, however, for reluctant lovers Beatrice and Benedick whose endless witty sparring threatens to keep them apart forever.
Tennant was last seen on the London stage in another Shakespearean production, playing the leading role in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet, though his season as the troubled Danish prince was cut short by injury. His other London credits include The Pillowman at the National Theatre, though he is best known for his television work as Dr Who.
Tate, who starred as Donna Noble opposite Tennant in the time-travelling family drama, is currently appearing at the National Theatre in Alan Ayckbourn’s Season’s Greetings. Also best known for her TV work, which includes her comedy series The Catherine Tate Show, the actress, like Tennant, has previously worked with the RSC and at the National Theatre.
Prior to the opening of Much Ado About Nothing, the Wyndham’s theatre will host the transfer of Royal Court hit Clybourne Park, which won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play in 2010.
