Stockwell, the dramatisation of the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, which premiered at the Landor theatre earlier this summer, is to transfer to the Tricycle theatre for a short run from 9 to 20 September.
Stockwell plays at the Kilburn venue following Pornography, Simon Stephens’s play about the tumultuous week in 2005 in which London’s underground was attacked by suicide bombers, setting in motion the sequence of events that would lead to the fatal shooting of de Menezes two weeks later.
Four years after Brazilian electrician de Menezes was mistaken for a suspected suicide bomber and shot nine times by police in Stockwell tube station, this production weaves together the various voices from the inquest’s many witnesses to chart the desperate acceleration towards one of the most controversial moments in the history of the Metropolitan Police.
Writer Kieron Barry and director Sophie Lifschutz have edited the court transcripts to produce a piece of theatre that The Times described in a review of its staging at the Landor theatre as “more gripping than anything else to be seen in the London theatre.”
