Patrick Stewart and Henry Goodman, both currently on the West End stage, lead the winners of the 2007 Theatrical Management Association (TMA) Theatre Awards, which were announced last night in a ceremony at Hampstead theatre.
Stewart won Best Performance in a Play for the title role in Macbeth for Chichester Festival Theatre, which transferred to London’s Gielgud theatre in September. Goodman picked up Best Performance in a Musical for the role of Tevye in Sheffield Theatres’ production of Fiddler On The Roof, which has been playing the Savoy in London since May this year.
Choreographer and director Matthew Bourne was recognised with the Special Award for Individual Achievement. Bourne’s show The Car Man was recently in London, and his Nutcracker! returns to Sadler’s Wells in December.
London theatres were represented elsewhere in the awards. Polly Stenham’s That Face, which played the Royal Court Upstairs in April, picked up the Best New Play award, while the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of Anthony Neilson’s The Wonderful World Of Dissocia, which visited the Royal Court in March, won Best Touring Production. Tim Supple was named Best Director for his international production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which came to the Roundhouse in March.
Other winners in this year’s TMA Theatre Awards, which honour regional productions across the UK, were Meg Fraser for All My Sons at the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh (Best Supporting Performance in a Play), Sunshine On Leith at Dundee Rep (Best Musical Production and Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Anne Louise Ross), Opera North’s Peter Grimes (Achievement in Opera) and Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Stravinsky! A Celebration 2007 (Achievement in Dance).
