Steffan Rhodri joins Old Vic’s Hairy Ape

First Published 16 September 2015, Last Updated 1 August 2018

Steffan Rhodri is among the performers set to join Olivier Award winner Bertie Carvel in The Old Vic’s forthcoming revival of Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape.

Richard Jones’ production, which will play from 17 October to 21 November, marks the Gavin And Stacey and Harry Potter actor’s latest theatrical foray following his recent performance opposite Stephen Merchant in the West End revival of The Mentalists.

Rhodri is joined in the cast of O’Neill’s iconic American drama by recent Everyman co-stars Adam Burton and Nicholas Karimi. For Burton, The Hairy Ape marks his return to The Old Vic having previous appeared opposite Eve Best in The Duchess Of Malfi.

The quartet are joined in the production by Buffy Davis, whose recent stage credits include Uncle Vanya at the St James Theatre and The Old Vic’s Hedda Gabler, Callum Dixon (The Complaint, Hampstead Theatre) and RADA graduate Rosie Sheehy, who makes her professional debut in the production.

Christopher Akrill, Charlie Cameron, Okorie Chukwu, Phil Hill, Ben Lee, Oliver Llewellyn-Jenkins, Luke Murphy and Elan James complete the cast.

Jones’ production of O’Neill’s classic expressionist masterpiece will see former Matilda The Musical star Carvel take on the role of labourer Yank. Having revelled in his status as the strongest stoker on a transatlantic liner, Yank’s life changes forever when he’s called a ‘filthy beast’ by the overbred daughter of a steel merchant, leading him on a journey that forces him to confront primal questions about his true place in the world.

The Hairy Ape will open at The Old Vic following the current run of Future Conditional, which stars Rhodri’s Gavin And Stacey co-star Rob Brydon, and prior to the Waterloo venue’s festive offering, Dr Seuss’ The Lorax. Tickets for all three productions can be booked through us.
