Theatre Royal Bath’s critically acclaimed production of Richard Greenberg’s The American Plan will transfer to the St James theatre this summer.
Playing from 2 July (press night 8 July) to 10 August, David Grindley’s take on the Tony Award-winning playwright’s tale of ravaged dreams, broken souls, twisted motives and deceit stars TMA Award winner Diana Quick as an overbearing mother intent on controlling her daughter’s future.
Set in the 1960s, Greenberg’s drama centres on Lili Adler, a beautiful, fragile daughter of a wealthy German-Jewish refugee, who meets a handsome young stranger and finds herself falling in love. But when her mother learns of their relationship, she proceeds to poison the young man’s affection and Lili’s one chance to escape looks like being lost forever.
When the play received its UK premiere at the Ustinov Studio in Bath’s premier venue earlier this year, The Independent’s Paul Taylor described the show in his five star review as “A superlatively acted production that it would be criminal not to see transferred to London”.
The production, which also features performances from Luke Allen-Gale, Emily Taaffe, Dona Croll and Mark Edel-Hunt, will play at the St James theatre following another transfer, London Wall, which begins previews tonight following its run at the Finborough theatre.
