Double Olivier Award winner Samantha Spiro will play Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s Globe’s production of Macbeth, which will mark the directorial debut of fellow Olivier Award winner Eve Best when it opens later this year.
Starring alongside Rocket To The Moon star Joseph Millson as Shakespeare’s tyrannical Scottish ruler, Spiro returns to the venue to play his ruthlessly ambitious wife following her 2012 performance as another of the Bard’s strong-willed females in The Taming Of The Shrew. Spiro’s other theatre credits include Filumena at the Almeida theatre and Hello, Dolly! at the Regent’s Park Open Air theatre, a role for which she won her second Olivier Award after collecting the first of her prestigious accolades for her performance in Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along.
Millson and Spiro will be joined in the cast of Shakespeare’s dark political tale by cabaret artist Bette Bourne who will return to Shakespeare’s Globe to play the Porter following his performance in 2004’s Romeo And Juliet. Bourne’s other theatre credits include Resident Alien at the Bush theatre, and The Vortex at the Donmar Warehouse.
Macbeth will play from 22 June to 29 September as part of a season that will see another Olivier Award winner return to the acclaimed Southbank venue, when Roger Allam stars as Prospero in Jeremy Herrin’s production of Shakespeare’s magical drama The Tempest.
