Shrek The Musical has announced two family-friendly initiatives with a new ‘school night’ performance schedule and a one-off performance for children with special needs.
From 7 March, Wednesday performances of the family musical will start at 19:00, so children can be entertained by Shrek and Donkey and tucked up in bed at a more school night-friendly time. The musical has also introduced a new family ticket package for Wednesday and Thursday evening performances with prices starting at £99, helping to make it more affordable for families to see the hit show.
On 16 May the production will play a special relaxed performance for children with sensory and communication needs with tickets free for children and only £5 for adults. The performance aims to allow families with children with special needs to enjoy the production in a more open and laid-back environment.
Presented by theatre educational charity Mousetrap Theatre Projects, and supported by ICAP and the show’s producer DreamWorks Theatricals, the companies are also working together to produce an educational resource pack which will be made available online from April. The pack has been created to help support teachers and parents and introduce elements of the production including characters, story line and settings to children prior to watching the performance.
Shrek The Musical tells the now famous story of the swamp-dwelling ogre who finds himself on a life-changing journey to save Princess Fiona with a wise-cracking donkey by his side. Original cast members Nigel Lindsay and Nigel Harman took to the fairy-tale book stage for the last time yesterday. Dean Chisnall steps into Shrek’s smelly shoes and Neil McDermott takes over as the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad from tomorrow.
