The Electric Hotel, a new moveable, multi-storey performance space, promises to unleash the voyeur in all of us when it presents an unusual piece of theatre in King’s Cross next month.
Created by theatre company Fuel and urban renewal specialists Container City from recycled shipping containers, the Electric Hotel is a four-storey building designed in the manner of 1920s Bauhaus architecture, with floor to ceiling windows to allow visitors to watch the goings-on within.
Sadler’s Wells and Without Walls have commissioned a creative team including Shunt director David Rosenberg, choreographer Frauke Requardt and designer Börkur Jónsson to create a piece of dance theatre which positions the audience as voyeurs to the lives unfolding behind the windows of the hotel. Wearing headphones to eavesdrop inside the building, they watch the residents in their private rooms, observing their natural habits and unnatural fantasies in a unique performance.
Currently playing at the Norwich Festival, the Electric Hotel will be transported on tour during May and June, coming to London from 2 to 19 June, where it will find a temporary home next to the last remaining Victorian ironwork Gas Holder at King’s Cross.
