Sadler’s Wells breaks convention for fourth year

First Published 17 April 2008, Last Updated 22 April 2008

Breakin’ Convention, the annual international festival of hip hop dance theatre, returns to Sadler’s Wells on the first May bank holiday weekend, 5-7 May.

First staged at Sadler’s Wells in 2004, the event is now in its fourth year and has grown to become the biggest hip hop dance theatre festival in the world. Founded and artistic directed by UK hip hop artist Jonzi D, Breakin’ Convention aims to showcase the technical skills and talents of international hip hop dance theatre artists.

This year’s event sees companies from France, Japan, Brazil, Belgium, the US and the UK perform on the main stage from 18:00 to 22:30 over three days. There is no allocated seating, meaning audience members are free to come and go as they please and check out the other events taking place in the building, including impromptu dance sessions, workshops and youth group performances. DJs perform in the foyer from 16:00 each day, and the whole of Sadler’s Wells will be transformed by large-scale graffiti exhibitions.

Tickets start from £12. More information about the event, plus video clips and photos, can be found at www.breakinconvention.com
