Sadler’s celebrates 15th anniversary

Published 30 October 2012

Sadler’s Wells will celebrate its 15th anniversary next year with an exciting 2013 season featuring work from all 14 of the venue’s high-profile Associate Artists.

Announced at a press conference today, the 2013 season will feature A String Of Rites, a series of shows celebrating the centenary of Stravinsky’s The Rite Of Spring, Sadler’s Sampled, a two week event with affordable ticket prices that aims to bring world class dance to the widest possible audience, and the 10th anniversary of Sadler’s Wells’ annual festival of hip hop dance theatre Breakin’ Convention.

Following the success of the World Cities 2012 season, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch will return to the acclaimed Islington venue from 14 to 25 February with Two Cigarettes In The Dark and Vollmond, marking the beginning of what is set to become an annual event for the company.

Next year will also see the return of Akram Khan, whose intimate solo show DESH picked up the 2012 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and the Achievement in Dance Award at last weekend’s Theatre Awards UK, with the London premiere of his latest full-length work iTMOi (In The Mind Of Igor), which plays from 29 May to 1 June as part of the A String Of Rites season.

From 11 to 13 April, Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre will present two works by award-winning choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan, who has joined Sadler’s Wells as its 15th Associate Artist.

Other season highlights include the National Youth Dance Company’s performance of its debut show and work from Hofesh Schechter and the National Ballet of Canada.

The venue touched upon 2011/2012’s success at today’s conference, announcing that the number of shows performed at Sadler’s Wells, the Peacock theatre and the Lilian Baylis Studio has increased to 677, 53 shows more than last year, with more than 650,000 tickets being sold in the UK and on tour in the last 12 months.
