Independent producer Mark Rubinstein has been named the new President of the Society of London Theatre, following on from outgoing President Nica Burns.
The announcement of the 30th President was made today at SOLT’s AGM, where Burns, who has been a hugely enthusiastic and vocal figurehead for London theatre during her tenure, stood down after three fantastically successful years at the head of the trade association for London’s theatre owners, managers and producers.
Rubinstein, who has worked as a producer on shows including current West End hits Butley and War Horse, the National Theatre production of Fela!, which will run at Sadler’s Wells this summer, and previous hits Glengarry Glen Ross, The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo and Bent, commented: “I appreciate the enormous work Nica Burns and [Chief Executive] Julian Bird have done and the changes they have made to the Society to bring it further into the 21st century. I am greatly looking forward to working with everybody.”
Rubinstein spent six years as Finance Director of the Royal Court, where he general managed the successful West End transfers of a number of productions. He has previously been General Manager of the Institute for Contemporary Arts, Senior Producer for Bill Kenwright Ltd and a consultant to the Old Vic. He also sits on the board of Complicite and Stage One.
Rubinstein will use his wealth and variety of experience both producing and managing productions to lead London’s theatres through the next three years, during which time Burns will continue to play an active role as SOLT’s Vice President.
Bird, SOLT’s members and staff congratulated Rubinstein after today’s announcement and look forward to working with him in the years ahead.
