The Royal Shakespeare Company has programmed events and exhibitions that will run alongside their ongoing London season at the Barbican. This comprises of an exhibition which sees some of Shakespeare’s most memorable and inspiring lines transformed into artworks, a series of talks exploring the actions of King Lear through the eyes of his subjects, and a backstage session for students with the RSC’s technical team.
Well Said!
Well Said!, a free, family-friendly exhibition, celebrating some of the most famous lines in the English language, will be on display in the foyer of the Barbican from 28 October until 23 December 2016.
Quotes, including favourites shared from eminent writers, actors and poets with the RSC, from Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, histories and poetry, have been transformed into a range of artworks by some of the UK’s most talented contemporary artists and craftspeople.
King Lear’s Subjects
A series of discussions held at the Barbican will explore the actions of King Lear through the eyes of his most loyal subjects. Actors in the roles in current and past productions discuss the relationship of The Fool, Cordelia and the Earl of Kent with the eponymous king, all three remaining devoted to him as his kingdom falls apart.
The discussions, featuring Forbes Masson, Graham Turner, Natalie Simpson, and Antony Byrne, will take place on 19 November, 3 and 10 December at 10.30am, with tickets costing £8.
Barbican Backstage: RSC
Taking place on 22 November, Barbican Backstage will see students spending a day backstage with the RSC’s technical team as they prepare for the evening’s performance of King Lear. The day will give an insight into the technical process of staging a production, as well as the broad range of careers in the production process and wider theatre industry.
Students, from academic years 9 to 13, will spend time with both actors and the Assistant Director and will also work with members of the lighting, stage management, sound and design teams on specific production tasks.
