Matthew Warchus will direct Rhys Ifans as Ebenezer Scrooge in The Old Vic’s A Christmas Carol, a joyous new adaptation by Harry Potter And The Cursed Child playwright Jack Thorne.
Previewing at The Old Vic from 18 November with opening night on 29 November, just in time for the holiday season, the Charles Dickens classic will be vividly brought to the stage in a warm production full of merry music and festive cheer, recommended for ages 11+.
Transporting audiences to a bitterly chilly Christmas Eve night, a hard-hearted miser is visited by four ghosts, who take him on a journey to worlds past, present and future. But will Scrooge save himself from the results of a lifetime of fear and selfishness, now he can see the ramifications of his lonely existence?
Ifans was last seen on the stage at the Waterloo venue, acting alongside Glenda Jackson in Deborah Warner’s production of King Lear last year. On screen, he has recently starred in Snowden, Alice Through The Looking Glass, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
Artistic Director Matthew Warchus’ extensive theatre credits include the Olivier Award-winning Groundhog Day musical, seven-time Olivier-winning Matilda The Musical, and Tony Award-winning God Of Carnage.
Tickets for A Christmas Carol go on sale to the general public on Friday 11 August. For more information, visit the venue’s website.
