There will be a Relaxed Performance of the smash-hit show, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, on Saturday 6 April at 2.30pm.
This special matinee performance will take place during World Autism Awareness Week at the Piccadilly Theatre.
Relaxed Performances are designed specifically for people who benefit from a more relaxed environment. They are ideal for those on the autism spectrum, with sensory and communication difficulties, or with a learning disability.
At this special performance, there will be a relaxed attitude to sound and audience movement in the auditorium, with interactions welcomed. Parts of the foyer will also be available as a relaxing quiet space for those who want to leave and re-enter the auditorium during the show. During the show, there will be trained members of staff who will welcome and help audience members.
The show itself will also make small changes to lighting and sound effects for this performance. This includes the removal of strobe lighting and flashing lights, as well as reducing loud noises.
After the show, there will be a Q&A session with the actors, who will be in costume but out of character.
Based on the successful novel, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time is the story of fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone. Christopher has an extraordinary brain, is exceptional at maths but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When Christopher finds his neighbour’s dog, Wellington, dead in the backyard, he begins a meticulous investigation into finding the culprit. He’s never been anywhere alone before, detests being touched and distrusts strangers, but his detective work takes him on a journey that upturns his world.
Suitable for ages 11+, the show has been a huge success, winning seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.
This isn’t the first time the show has done a Relaxed Performance either. They have previously done them at the National Theatre, in the West End, on tour and even on Broadway.
A visual story and supporting video will be available to download from the show’s official website from early March. These materials were created in consultation with Youth Patrons volunteers from the charity Ambitious About Autism. This national charity provides services, raises awareness and campaigns for change for those with autism.
