With the doors about to close on the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre for another year, it’s time to look ahead to their 2020 productions and start blocking out your diary for it!
Their 2020 summer season includes a brand-new musical, a much-loved Shakespearean love story and a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.
Here’s what they’ve got in store:
101 Dalmatians
When’s it on?: 16 May – 21 June 2020
Opening the 2020 summer season at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre will be a musical adaptation of 101 Dalmatians.
A newly commissioned musical, it couldn’t be a more perfect opening production, as the original story is actually set in Regent’s Park!
The show will be directed by Timothy Sheader, who this year directed the Regent’s Park production of Hansel And Gretel. The book will be done by Zinnie Harris, with music and lyrics by Douglas Hodge. And looks like the show is going to feature puppetry too, as Toby Olié has signed onto the production to do puppetry design and direction.
Other creatives confirmed to work on the show are Katrina Lindsay (Set and Costume Designer), Olivier Award nominee Liam Steel (Choreographer), Sarah Travis (Musical Supervisor and Orchestrator), Howard Hudson (Lighting Designer) and Tarek Merchant (Musical Director).
Romeo and Juliet
When’s it on?: 27 June – 25 July 2020
Up next is the iconic Shakespearean love story, Romeo and Juliet.
Directed by Kimberley Sykes, the production will tell this timeless story of two young people torn apart by a divided society and forbidden love.
Carousel
When’s it on?: 31 July – 19 September
Concluding the summer season will be the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s much-loved musical, Carousel.
Directed by Timothy Sheader, the show will see Timothy reunite with choreographer Drew McOnie. Drew received high acclaim (and an Olivier Award nomination) for his choreographing of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2017, and we can’t wait to see what he does with Carousel.
The musical is all about Billy Bigelow, who works as a carousel barker. When he strikes up a romance with millworker Julie Jordan, it costs them both their jobs. In a bid to financially provide for Julie (and their unborn child), Billy takes part in a robbery. But after it goes tragically wrong, Billy is given a chance to put things right.
The show features an unforgettable score, which includes If I Loved You and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Dragons and Mythical Beasts
When’s it on?: 11 August – 6 September
A family-friendly story, Dragons and Mythical Beasts is a new 50-minute daytime show. From the team that created Dinosaur World Live, enter into a magical world of myths and legends in this fantastical new interactive show for all the family.
Want to head down to the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre before it closes for another year? You’ve only got until 21 September to catch their final production of the summer, Evita. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, it is the theatre’s highest-grossing production and has played to audiences of over 72,000 across its seven-week run.
Members’ priority booking for the 2020 season opens at 11am, Friday 13 September. Public booking opens at 11am, Friday 11 October.
