Record-breaking Matilda extends

First Published 13 September 2012, Last Updated 13 September 2012

Hot on the heels of its inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records, Matilda The Musical, the hit adaptation of Roald Dahl’s famous children’s story, has lengthened its London engagement.

The show, a record-breaker with seven Olivier Award wins in one ceremony earlier this year, is now booking at the Cambridge theatre until 22 December 2013.

Tickets for the new booking period, all 400,000 of them, went on sale earlier today, marking the seventh Roald Dahl Day. No doubt Matilda fans across the country will be trying to eat an entire chocolate cake to themselves in celebration.

The musical tale of a special young girl who, burdened with loathsome parents and a headmistress with a unique view on education, rises above her tormentors and discovers a very special talent, was first staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon before moving to the West End last October.

With its book by Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, direction by Matthew Warchus and an incredible cast of talented child performers – and adults too – its heart and wit garnered universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike before winning more awards than any other production in the history of the Olivier Awards in April.

The RSC will hope Matilda’s magic will be recreated across the Atlantic, when it opens a Broadway production next spring.
