Last night, after a 14-week renovation, Aldwych Theatre officially reopened its doors in the grandest of fashions: the world premiere of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical. The sequin-filled, rocking biomusical has taken three years to write and after much anticipation, a very lucky audience – including the legendary Tina Turner herself – witnessed the product of all that hard work.
The jukebox musical about the life and career of Tina Turner evoked a full-house standing ovation, plus a 15-minutes encore and here’s why.
Adrienne Warren
Not many people can perform like Tina Turner – but Adrienne Warren can. Taking on the role (and voice) of the Queen Of Rock is a monumental task but Adrienne does it with ease. There wasn’t a single song that didn’t induce goosebumps and awe.
Not only does she have the voice, she has the energy, too. The gruelling show is packed with high-octane dances, quick changes and more power ballads than an 80s compilation album but Adrienne never tires or loses her breath the whole time. And she’s on stage almost the entire time.
As this is Adrienne’s West End debut, she is fairly unknown in the UK. But, I’m positive, that is going to change. Her rendition of some of the world’s most famous and beloved songs is astounding and I can’t wait to see more from her.
The children
Talk about stars in the making. The children who play Young Anna Mae (Tina) will tug at your heartstrings while wowing your eardrums. During last night’s performance, Claudia Elie gave a performance that would blow you away if it came from a seasoned performer.
The costumes
Iconic hair. Trend-setting denim jackets. That red mini-dress. The show is packed with glitzy costumes that embody the 40-year span of the story. From the modest church clothes of a preacher’s daughter to the leather dress that relaunched her career, the costumes tell the story of Tina Turner as much as the show does.
It gives you hope
When you’re young, pop stars and actors may inspire you to pursue a career in the arts. But when you’re older, there’s much more you can learn from their dedication, determination and achievements despite adversity.
Tina suffered what should have been crippling hardships throughout her life. She was abandoned by her parents at a very young age and entered an abusive relationship that lasted over 16 years. That relationship led her to drugs and the separation almost ended in bankruptcy. But she never lost sight of her goals. Despite her personal life – and the social attitudes of the time – Tina persisted and became one of the most influential artists of all time… when she was in her 40s.
The tale of Tina’s triumph over adversity will make you feel empowered and inspired. You might even start writing that play you’ve been thinking about… just me? Okay…
Girl Power
Tina Turner is possibly the most famous domestic abuse survivor so celebrating her and her strength during the time of Time’s Up and #MeToo feels right. And to add to the feminist movement, the team behind Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is led by playwright Katori Hall, director Phyllida Lloyd, and executive producer, Tina Turner herself.
Simply The Best
And all of the other incredible songs weaved into the story. From understated performances of Don’t Turn Around and I Can’t Stand The Rain to full-on, belting renditions of Tina anthems like Proud Mary and Simply The Best, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical has all of the hits you crave to hear performed live. You’ll even have a chance to sing along at the end during the massive concert-like finale.
